It has been my experience that most C. acutiflora flowers have a purplish hue to them when new. I would expect that they would turn more straw-coloured with age. Another explanation for the more purple colour is a colder winter (if, in fact, you experienced this ;). Colder winters can effect flower and leaf colours in a multitude of plants, even grasses.
