My 4 year old clumps of calamagrostis acutiflora have changed this year. The first 3 years the panicles were stiff, upright and golden straw coloured. This year they are feathery with a pink/purple hue. There are a few golden panicles in some of the clumps. Can you explain please.

    Hi, Anne,
    It has been my experience that most C. acutiflora flowers have a purplish hue to them when new. I would expect that they would turn more straw-coloured with age. Another explanation for the more purple colour is a colder winter (if, in fact, you experienced this ;). Colder winters can effect flower and leaf colours in a multitude of plants, even grasses.

      Yes we did have a cold winter so that seems to be the answer to the change in colour. In fact, as you said, the flowers are already beginning to change. They are less feathery, but are still purplish.
