Frogspawn

Frogspawn

I am so excited! I found frogspawn in my tiny water feature last week. I was concerned for the frogs because the new next door neighbours filled in their pond last year. But the frogs it seems were not to be outdone. I see this as one of the rewards of organic garending - I just hope some of the tadpoles make it.

Hahaha HORRAY for frog spawn! Well done indeed! I hope the little fellas do well too- can't wait to see pictures of the little hopping critters in the upcoming months! Your pictures are almost enough to get me to make a mond of my own.I love spring and all the goodness of new life and new growth. Thanks for sharing.

I, too, get a little thrill whenever I see frogspawn - and I always feel compelled to protect those little guys from birds, fish, cats, etc. But then I have that internal debate - do I interfere with nature or let it take its course? If you do want to help those little ones out, you could cover your feature with wire netting - that would at least deter cats and some of the larger birds (at least you have no fish to nibble them) from having a snack. On the other hand, the natural process of birds feeding on some of the spawn could keep the number of tadpoles in check so there aren't too many for the space they are in. Whatever you decide to do, please keep us posted on what happens!

Bless their cottton socks the tadpoles have hatched and what looks like about a hundred of them are swimming around. I gather that they will live on the algae in the water feature until such times as they grow their back legs and become carnivorous. At this point I think I'll just let nature take its course apart from topping it up with rain water and hope for the best.

  • Hi Carole

Lucky you! We dug and lined our pond towards the end of last year, now I am just waiting for hubby to finish the edging - I can't wait to plant it up and wait for the wildlife to come. Hopefully you will have lots of frogs out on slug patrol in the coming months!
