The sprawling stems of this delicate looking plant are smooth, unlike those of its larger relative Stellaria holostea which have rough edges to the square stems. This plant is common in hedgebanks, waysides and meadows and adds colour and structure to a garden hedgebank, especially in conjunction with other native spring flowers such as lesser celandine and bluebell. It is a nectar source for bees and flies.
