Pruning Groups

General post from Shoot User

Pruning Groups are mentioned many times. What are they and where can we see them complete with pruning instructions?

Interested particularly in Group 8

Early flowering evergreen shrubs fall into group 8. and should be pruned immediately after flowering. here is a link to the RHS website

i am not familiar with shoot if they have info on the different groups.
    hope this helps

    Hi Mother Nature
Thanks for the tip of visiting the RHS site - far more informative than Shoot. Shoot would do a lot better if they had a section where pruning groups could be viewed directly but I have the info now and know where to find them in future.

    Many thanks

      Hi, Colin,
I understand your frustration when looking for advice on how to tend your plants, but the pruning info is here on Shoot as well. If your Choisya ternata is in your 'Plants I Have' list, all you have to do is click on the green highlighted pruning instructions. You'll be immediately directed to a page that explains what pruning group 8 is, as well as when and how to do it. It will also list any other plants that you have (as long as they are in your Plants I Have list) that fall into pruning group 8 so you know which other plants in your garden can be pruned in the same way and/or at the same time. So, both the RHS and Shoot have what you need, though I tend to prefer the more personal feel of Shoot since I can personalise the experience tomy garden specifically.

        Hi Cathy
Thanks for understanding my frustration over this. However it isn't obvious and in the case of Choisya ternata the pruning advice appears under June and clicking on the highlighted portion takes you to a general note which really provides scant information regarding pruning for the uninitiated. You are left wondering if this is just a general note or is it all you get for Group 8. Nowhere does it mention Group 8.

It would be so nice to have a care note for each plant that said Pruning Group "X" and clicking this with one click should take you to a page explaining exactly what Pruning Group "X" was and how to go about it.

Never mind we can't have all we want in this life and so I'll just be satisfied with the general excellence of the Shoot site.

Quite agree! If I am recommending Shoot to my design clients, it would be a much better product if there was a link for every plant that clicked through to the appropriate pruning instructions. A comment below implies that this is the case, but I haven't found it to be so.

Hi Rose, we are compiling a list of things to improve for the new website following our recent investment. We will add this one to the list now. Thanks for the feedback. Cheers, Nicola
