  • How to choose?

Hi Nicola - great idea for a forum topic...and very thought provoking.

It's not easy having a favourite as love my plants for different reasons: the easy ones; the floral stunners; the fabulous foliage; the good all rounders; the rescued ones; and those that appeared from nowhere.

Still am very interested in what other members favour - and what about you?!

      Hi Laura,

Thanks for the vote of approval :-).

I am just amazed by the diversity of plants out there, and as people request us to add so many new ones, I am always seeing new plants in people's gardens which fascinate me.

My taste is changing which is interesting. I used to love wisteria and lavender, but I have gone off wisteria a little bit because the blooms are so much larger.

I really like ornamental grasses, there are some amazing heuchera out there, which I discovered as they feature in so many designers gardens. In terms of flowering plants, I do like roses, but they can be a lot of work. I fell in love with the Fox tail lily (Eremurus himalaicus) used at this year's Chelsea Flower Show. It was very dramatic, and set off beautifully by the rest of the planting.

It's got to be the first flower I ever grew on my own - Lily of the Valley. My dad gave me five bulbs to plant when I was about 3 years old and I remember them multiplying every year with those wonderfully shaped leaves. And the smell was heavenly! We had to move house when I was 10 years old, and I was heartbroken to have to leave them behind. I've just planted half a dozen bulbs in my current garden (fifty years later!) and I hope they will be as successful as my first attempt.
