Dasha, most climbers will do the job you are asking it to do. It is just a case of training. Most clematis are decidious so you would only have the privacy when in growth. A lot of clematis do require pruning (only group 1 do not) to keep in good condition and to all too bloom. Group 1 clematis eg montana will cover a big area and provide you will lots of bloom. I am not an expert, so I am unable to give you complete advice re specific plants but I can share my experience: I tried something similar with a clematis and found that once the clematis was large enough to reach the top of the fence - the weight pulled it over and the neighbours enjoyed the blooms not me. I am now training a rambling rose to cover the fence and will then plant clematis, keeping them in check to keep, to grow with the rose, thus keeping the blooms on my side of the fence. I hope this helps a little bit toward making you choices. Cheers, Angie
I am looking for a climbing plant to go onto my trellis that sits on top of the wall that separates us and our neighbours, effectively what I would like it to do is to grow up the wall and then grow left and right onto the trellis.. is that possible?
thanks, Dasha.

Thank you for the response, can't do pic, but it flowered in April, left fluffy seed heads now. It says it flowers again later in the year. Does that help?
Do you have any photographs you could send us? When exactly does it flower – has this now passed?
If you could send us some images it will hopefully help identification, and subsequent advice on planting and pruning. As a general rule, clematis like to have their roots in the shade, and rest of the plant in sun, but there are a couple of species this is not the case for. Pruning is determined by which ‘group’ the clematis falls into. If you could give us specific info on when exactly it flowers this should help in that respect.
I was given two early flowering, delicate blue, with later flush of flowers in autumn, pretty seedheads clematis. As the leaves match, I think this is the most likely candidate, they have no name. Do you have a suggestion for what else they could be? Advice on planting, please, should it be deep and should I cut right back?
