SOLANUM CRISPUM (GLASNEVIN)

SOLANUM CRISPUM (GLASNEVIN)

Question from Shoot User

Hi

We purchased a 2 foot high specimen and transplanted it into an enormous pot about 15 months ago.

We water it regularly - and feed it with 'spray & grow'. However this year we are getting terrible leaf drop (leaves start turning yellow) It has been flowering well but even the flowers seem to be dying off! Have you any ideas as to the reason please or what we can do to bring it back to its former glory?
Thanks

    Hi, Stanley,
Do you have this in your list of 'Plants I Have'? You need an account for this, but it well worth it for care advice and info on what pests and diseases attack S. crispum 'Glasnevin' . A few questions - is there any pattern to the leaf drop and leaf yellowing? How often do you feed it? Too much feed can cause the leaves to yellow and drop. Too much or too little water can do that as well. It doesn't sound as if it was hit by frost - you wouldn't get flowers in that case. Have you given the plant a thorough check for pests? If you don't see any, and even though S. crispum isn't a main host for vine weevil, I wonder if those pesky varmints are attacking it?
This is all speculation at this point so does any of this seem to fit with your plant? Also, would you be able to post an photo?

      Hi Kathy
      Thanks for your reply.
There does not appear to be any pests and winter was very kind to the plant.
As far as the leaf drop is concerned, the leaves turn yellow (many are still green) and just 'drop' off' - the flowers are now dying off too!
I will send a photo in the next day or so but I don't think that will tell you much.
Watering/feeding is really guesswork, so I can't really tell you whether I am under or over feeding/watering. In fact I was told that the plant is very greedy for water?
      Regards

        Hi Kathy
Here are three pics - but I don't think they will help.
        Any further ideas?

We cut back our Solanum to around 3 ft last winter, since when it has grown to 15-20ft; however, there has been about 1 flower this summer and many of the leaves have seemingly been eaten. Pictures attached. Can anyone please assist with what's going on?

    Hello,

I am aware that this is a very old thread, but wondering how your plant is doing now and if you figured out what happened then? My grown up solanum is full of buds and looked very healthy until recently when suddenly there's lots of yellow leaves on it :(
