I have been told by a lot of people that it is not completely hardy, and others have had luck with it, so only time will tell.

Scorched leaves

Hi, My plant is in a large container facing east, during the cold spell that we have had with very cold easterly winds the leaves of the plant got very badly scorched. I have removed all the scorched leaves and some of the dead stems. Will this plant come back to life or have I lost it.

Hi Cathy, thanks for this. The only way I break the rules in the web guidance on this site is having them in full sun. I use the right compost in the pot, I feed regularly with acid feed and water with purified tap water to avoid the chalk. I live in Wiltshire on chalky soil. Any furgher help very gratefully received. David

Hi, David,
It's hard to say without knowing where it is growing (including climate, soil, sun exposure, etc) and how you have been caring for it thus far. First step, if you haven't already done so, is to check out its plant page here on Shoot to see if you have it growing in the best conditions possible.

Hi, Martin,
You can find all you need to know about Gardenia jasminoides 'Kleim's Hardy' here on Shoot and if you add it to your 'Plants I Have' list you will get detailed care instructions for the entire year. It is tender in frost so needs to be in a warm, sheltered site. It can be grown in a container.

Hi Pauline, yes, if you login and 'edit' your 'My Garden', there are explanations for all of these hardiness codes. If you tell us about your garden conditions including your hardiness rating we will help you work out which plants suit your garden (see WHERE TO GROW on each plant page)

Here is a summary about hardiness for you: Each plant in our database comes with a rating of H1, H2, H3 and/or H4 depending on the temperture it needs to thrive.

Almost everywhere in the UK, we can grow H4-Hardy (-15C/ 5F) and Frost Hardy (-5C/23F) plants. So unless you live very far north, you should make a note that you can grow plants with an H4 rating.

If your garden is in the south and stays warmer, you can also include H3-Tender (5C/41F) and Half Hardy (0C/32F) plants. (if not, best not to add H3 to your list)

If you can grow plants in a cold greenhouse, add H2-Unheated greenhouse to your list. And finally if you have a heated greenhouse, add H1-Heated Greenhouse/Indoors.

Is there somewhere on the site that says what the H2, H3, hardiness ratings mean?

Thanks.
