Is there anything (a grub or caterpillar) in the dead buds? I had this one year. But they are ok this year (same plants).

My pinks seem to reach the point where the buds are about to open, but they usually just die before that happens! Any tips?

Hi Mike and Anne,

To take softwood cuttings from Dianthus just cut a non flowering shoot off the plant, trim it to just below a leaf joint, pull away any lower leaves to leave just a few sets at the top, dip into rooting powder and insert around the edge of a pot filled with gritty compost. Water well, and place a polythene bag over the pot and secure it with an elastic band. If you leave this on a sunny windowsill and keep the compost moist you should find that the cuttings root within a month.

Hope this helps! Don’t forget to add it to your ‘plants I have’ list to receive regular care instructions [LINK]https://https://www.shootgardening.com/plant/dianthus-tickled-pink?referrer=%2Fplant%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Ddianthus+tickled+pink[/LINK]
