The poppy seeds most frequently used in baking are from Papaver somniferum - this is the one that contains opiates. Papaver orientale seeds are edible, but will most likely be far less flavoursome than P. somneiferum. Please be advised, however, that all other parts of any Poppy plant are toxic.
