Diseased spinning gum

Diseased spinning gum

Question from Stephanie Summers

My Eucalyptus perrineana is suffering from some kind of disease/pest which has caused all the peripheral leaves to shrivel. It is about 8ft tall but has put on no growth unlike the other eucalypt species planted at the same time. the stem still looks healthy and the lower leaves seem to have survived. The problem has lasted at least since last summer and the tree doesn't seem to have changed since then - in size, any more leaves etc. Our climate is mild in Chepstow and despite the bad winter just gone the other eucalypts have survived. Any suggestions what this could be and any way of curing it? It's pouring with rain at the moment but if the answer is not immediately obvious, I could take photos when more convenient.

    Hi Stephanie,

Difficult to say without seeing the tree itself. Are there any lesions on the trunk? There are a few diseases which can affect eucalyptus, including eucalyptus rust, anthracnose, a fungal disease phytophthora fungi (commonly known as, amongst other things, crown rot) and canker.

Photos may be useful, but if you really wanted an expert opinion you could try sending a cutting to the RHS pest and disease identification service who might be able to help.

Don’t forget to add to your ‘plants I have’ list to receive regular care instructions: Eucalyptus perriniana .

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Katy, it sounds a good idea to contact RHS - I didn't realise there was such a service. I did try spraying with a general bug killer a few weeks ago but it doesn't look any different from before. I had no idea eucalypts could be susceptible to so many conditions.
