Cultivation

Under glass, grow in loam-based compost with added leaf mould & grit. Place in full light with shade from hot sun. Needs moderate humidity. Water moderately in growth, sparingly in winter. In frost-free areas, grow in moist but well-drained soil in bright light with protection from full sun.

I have one in my unheated greenhouse, keeping it dry in winter is the way to go. The older fronds do tend to get a creamy yellow, I remove them, but there should be a new set coming in, they are slow growing, so they only put one set at in a year, don't over water them even during the growing season.

Japanese Sago Palm

We purchased our sago plam in about October last year and wintered it in our unheated greenhouse, being careful not to overwater it. Before moving it back to the garden we noticed that some of the fronds were more brown than green. Does anybody know if this plant is dying or if we can rescue it in any way? Thank you.

Hi Andy, great looking 'tropical' plant. Have a look at some of these care instructions below..

Light: Bright light, but avoid direct sunlight in summer.
Water: Keep soil continuously moist throughout spring and summer, and reduce watering in the winter.
Temperature: Prefers warm and humid conditions. Hardy to 50ºF, but avoid freezing drafts.
Soil: A well-drained potting mix.
Fertilizer: Fertilize in Spring and throughout growing season.

New fronds on Sago Palm

One of my Sago Palms developed it's new fronds later than usual last year & have not fully opened yet.It has been stuck in limbo for the last 2 months so to speak.A couple of the frond tips turned brown as well & dropped off.Will i just let nature take it's course.Both of my palm's are overwintering in a unheated conservatory.
