Unfortunately it is not the longest lived tree and prone to being brittle and suffers from die back.

False acacia tree, mature, 8metres, has some branches bare of leaves, many branches brittle, and bark near base is crumbly and looks rotten. Might it be dieased, is it dangerous, is it treatable? The side of the trunk that has rotten bark was next door to an evergreen shrub that we felled due to white powdery leaf damage

Hi, Graham,
Not yet. Robinia pseudoacacia, and its cutlivars in particular, are late to break bud. I would say not to expect them until April, maybe mid-April when things start to warm up more.
