B. ventricosa is a vigorous, tender, evergreen bamboo forming spreading clumps of sturdy, dark green culms (canes) bearing whorls of linear to lance-shaped, dark green leaves. When stressed, the plant forms swollen internodes on the canes.

Cultivation

Grow in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in a sheltered site in sun or partial shade. Needs protection from cold, drying winds. May remain as a clump if grown in poor, dry soil but will be invasive in warm, moist, or favourable conditions. In a container, grow in loam-based compost & feed monthly in growth. Suitable for large gardens, in large containers, or grown within a root barrier.
