B. populneus is a borderline hardy, broadly oval, evergreen tree with ovate, glossy, variably-lobed, dark green leaves and, in summer, cymes of bell-shaped, red-spotted, cream, green, or pink flowers with recurved petal tips. Flowers are followed by brown pods splitting to reveal yellow-orange seeds.

Cultivation

Grow in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. In frost-prone areas, shelter from cold, drying winds and avoid wet winter conditions. Under glass, grow in loam-based compost with added sharp sand in full light. Water moderately & feed monthly in growth.
