Cultivation

Best grown in well-drained, alkaline to neutral soil in full sun. Tolerates dappled shade. Drought tolerant once established. Resents root disturbance so plant out in final position when small. May die back completely in winter in the coldest areas of its growing range. Grows at elevations from 80-300m (25-980'). A host plant for numerous butterfly species. Birds eat the seeds and use this shrub for cover and nesting. The roots are used for red dye.
