Additional plant details

Cultivation

Best grown in sharply-drained, dry, rocky, sandy soil in full sun. Drought tolerant once established. Tolerates coastal conditions. Not a true evergreen - the leaves persist throughout winter and only fall when new leaves emerge. An extremely slow-growing and long-lived plant, often taking 100 years to reach mature size. The oldest specimens are thought to be over 1,300 years old. Where native, grows at elevations from 600-3,000m (2,000-9,800').
