'Cosford' is an upright, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub or small tree with broadly ovate to heart-shaped, veined, toothed, mid- to dark green leaves turning yellow in autumn and pendent, yellow-brown flower catkins on bare stems in late winter and early spring. Flowers are followed by spherical, edible, pale brown nuts ready for harvest in early autumn.

Cultivation

Plant in moist, free-draining, ideally alkaline soil in full sun or partial shade. To maximise nut production, grow as a bush. Keep soil clear in a 60cm radius around trunk. Two cultivars are necessary for pollination and fruit production.

To maximise nut production break the sideshoots half way along their length in late summer. Then shorten these shoots to 3-4 buds when the catkins are shedding pollen in late winter. Remove up to one third of old overcrowded shoots to the main branches

Hi, Frances,
A good rule of thumb is a MINIMUM of 5 meters away from the foundation. With a small tree/medium-sized shrub like 'Cosford Cob', I'd say 5m will work. Anything much larger, and I would err on the side of caution and go ever farther.
