C. africanum is a compact, tender, clump-forming, deciduous, tuberous perennial with heart-shaped, dark green leaves, heavily mottled grey-green. Before the leaves emerge in autumn, erect stems bear pink flowers with reflexed petals and maroon bases.

Cultivation

Grow in a loam-based compost in a cool greenhouse in bright, filtered light. In leaf, water moderately and feed a low nitrogen liquid fertiliser. Keep dry when dormant. Repot when tubers fill their pot.
