Cultivation

Grown in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in partial shade. Will grow in full sun if the soil remains consistently moist in the growing season. Dies back in summer after flowering. Needs ample moisture in growth and dry conditions in dormancy. Avoid waterlogged conditions, especially in winter. Suitable for growing in a woodland setting or alongside a pond or stream. May bloom later when grown at higher elevations. Hardy to 3,300m (11,000').
