E. azurea is a floating or submerged, aquatic perennial with thick, floating or rooted stems bearing linear to strap-shaped submerged leaves and rounded to diamond-shaped, glossy, mid-green floating leaves. Spikes of pale blue flowers with yellow-spotted, dark purple throats bloom throughout summer.

      Cultivation

      In frost-free areas, grow on open water in full sun. In frost-prone areas, release plants on to the water surface after the danger of frost has passed. Considered a noxious weed in many introduced areas, particularly in the United States, New Zealand, and Australia. Under glass, provide full light and 40cm of head space for healthy growth.

      Pruning

      Remove yellowing leaves and withered flowers promptly. Keep spread under control and never introduce to natural water (rivers, lakes or ponds). Low oxygen conditions develop beneath spreading water hyacinth 'mats' which also impede water flow.
