HI, Joan,
I am surprised your has produced offshoots - that doesn't often happen. Also surprised that it has two stems! You can remove those little shoots (if their rooted) and pot them up. Loam-based compost is recommended. Would be able to post a photo?

POTTING ON A BANANA PLANT

When Bob Flowerdew gave a lecture at our local Garden Centre we bought one of the young bananas he brought with him. It has been kept in conservatory and now has two main stems, one about 12" high and the other about 10" high. There are a number of small shoots growing all round the base. What should I do now - put in a larger pot; take off the shoots and plant them up individually, And in what sort of compost? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi, Jules,
When it is big enough to handle, pot it up using a loam-based or loamless general purpose compost. If you have one, keep it in a greenhouse, otherwise keep it in a warm spot in full light with shade from hot sun (probably not an issue right now if you are in the UK!). Water regularly and feed it monthly (balanced liquid fertiliser is fine). Once it is warmer in late spring/early summer, you can start getting it used to being outside if you plan to plant it in the garden. You will probably need to repot in the summer since it grows so vigorously. Plant it in the ground in early autumn.

how do i look after my banana seedling

I have grown a banana seedling in a heated propagator but i now need to know how to look after it for the next few months until it is much bigger. I still have it in the propagator but it will soon be tto big for it so what do I need to do next?
