Hi Virginia, sorry to hear of your problem. Fremontedendron can be affected by Phytophthora which is a fungal disease that affects the roots and/or stem of the plant. The back end of the summer was wet and would have provided perfect conditions for the disease to take hold. Is there any damage to the branches of the shrub or do any of the roots look discoloured or dead? If so, it could be infected, in which case sadly there is no remedy and to prevent spread of the disease, it should be removed together with the surrounding soil which could contain spores which could cause further infections. If there are no other signs, you could see how it gets on this year and give it a prune once you can see where it is growing/dead. It would be good to hear back from you with details of any other symptoms or better still no other symptoms! All the best, Marissa

Flannel Bush Looking Sick

Hi -
I have a 3 year old Flannel Bush, about 9 feet tall. It was doing well until late last summer when it turned brown. 6 months later, it is still brown but it does have a few green, new leaves.

Has it gone through some kind of dormant period that it will come out of?

Hi Ian, Found some more advice for you...

`California Glory' is certainly not for every situation as it is very vigorous (if in a sheltered sunny spot can grow to 25 feet tall!) and it has a habit of dying after a few years, either wholly or in part.

Contact with the shoot hairs can irritate the skin, so that it is necessary to protect the eyes and exposed skin before attempting to prune it.

This plant does not tolerate very hard pruning. If training a fremontodendron against a wall, prune back the sideshoots to two to four buds after flowering. Otherwise, simply cut out dead wood.

Flannel Flower (pruning)

Hi, I have a small planter (1.4m x 0.3 x 0.3) I planed a Flannel Flower (Fremontodendron) this year. It has grown very fast and is now about two metres high. It has reached the top of a wall mounted trellis and I cant let it get any bigger. It has several side shoots that I have secured back to the trellis.

What is the best way to prune this plant?
