Grow in well-drained, preferably acid to neutral soil in full sun. Tolerates drought, strong winds, and salt spray. Where native, grows as elevations up to 1,200m (4,000'). A long-lived plant with some specimens reported to be more than 1,000 years old.

Seed, Hardwood cuttings

Propagation

Sow seed in a cold frame in autumn. Seed requires 2-3 months of cold stratification, followed by 2-3 months of warm stratification, and another 2-3 months of cold stratification. Soak seed in boiling water for 3-6 seconds prior to sowing. Some seed may germinate in spring but most will take a year to sprout.
