Cultivation

Grow in full sun in dry, poor to moderately fertile, well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil with low to moderate salt concentrations. Will not tolerate acid soil, flooding, or damp, waterlogged conditions, particularly in winter. Drought tolerant once established. Old leaves remain on the plant until new leaves emerge in spring. Requires both a male and female plant to produce seed. Important winter forage for small mammals, birds, and both wild and domestic grazing animals. Where native, grows at elevations from 100–2,700 m (330–8,800').
