Hi, If you can, have a look at the tips of the shoots/branches with a hand lens and see if you can see Aphids! (greenfly) they could be green or black and located up the stem next to where the needle grows out of the stem.

There is no control the tree is too big to spray, Best thing to do is to take each plant out and look at it as an opportunity to plant something else, make sure you prepare the soil well with manure or garden compost or compost from your local council recycling plant.

Hope this is helpful
John.

Umbrellar Pine , gone poorly

I wonder if someone could advise me what to do to help an Umbrella Pine (Sciadopitys verticallata ) which is turning an all-over brown. The needles are not dropping from the tree, which is about 15-20 feet tall, but it does look really poorly. The yellowing/browning started last year, but has accelerated enormously in the last two months. It is in a sheltered position, but gets a reasonable amount of light. The plant is about 20 years old.

Incidentally, a Cedrus Atlantica Glauca, in the same bed, has shed a lot of needles in the last two weeks---a connection?
