Q. engelmannii is a borderline hardy, spreading, deciduous to semi-evergreen tree with thick, leathery, oval to oblong, dull blue-green leaves and insignificant, pale yellow flowers in spring followed by ovoid to cylindrical, round-tipped acorns, half-enclosed with a warty cap.
