Cultivation

Plant dormant crowns from autumn to spring in fertile soil in sun. Dig in well-rotted manure before planting. Plant crown tip so it is just visible above the soil. Water regularly in dry spells. No summer dormancy so can be harvested in spring & autumn.

Pruning

Remove any flowering shoots that appear. Do not harvest the first year after planting. Harvest stalks from mid-spring to early summer (hold the stalk close to the ground and twist) Leave at least 4 stalks at any given time. Cut back dead leaves in autumn.

Propagation

Start seed inside in early to mid-spring at 20-25C in quality seed compost. Alternatively, seal inside polythene bags. Sow 15cm deep. Keep soil damp but not saturated. Germination takes 21-40 days. Lower temperature & move to a cold frame after seeds germ
