Cultivation

Grow in a fertile, moist or wet soil in full sun. Tolerates partial shade and short periods of seasonal flooding. Habit will be erect when grown in sun, trailing or spreading when grown in partial shade. Where native, a host plant for numerous butterfly and moth species. Grows at elevations from 910-3,500m (3,000-11,400'). Rodents, bears, and birds eat the fruit. Elk, deer and mountain goats eat the leaves. Provides cover for game birds, songbirds, and small mammals.
