Cultivation

Best grown in moist but well-drained, neutral, sandy loam in full sun. Tolerates light or full shade but fruiting will be reduced. Tolerates slightly alkaline and slightly acid soil. Spreads by underground rhizomes, especially in moist soil. Drought tolerant once established. Fruit is edible but the flavour is mild. Where native, grows at elevations from 1,950-3,800m (6,400-12,500').

Pruning

Prune after flowering by removing oldest stems that are at least three years old to the ground. Partially self-fertile but fruiting is improved with cross-pollination from another Ribes.

Sow seed in a cold frame in autumn. Seed requires 3-10 months cold stratification so sow as early in autumn as possible.
