Cultivation

Prefers humus-rich, moist but well-drained, acid to neutral soil in full sun or partial shade. In the wild, tends to form large colonies, particularly in disturbed areas. For fruit production, plant in mounded rows or raised beds between parallel wires for support. Avoid waterlogged conditions. First year stems (primocanes) only produce leaves. Lateral stems (floricanes) for the scond year and produce leaves, flowers, and fruit. Where native will grow in elevations up to 3,500m (11,000')
