Cultivation

Prefers poor to moderately fertile, sandy loam in full sun. Tolerates light shade and most soil conditions except waterlogged or chalk. Drought tolerant once established. Tends to bloom earlier in warm climates. Flowers are most fragrant at night. Called soapweed since the peeled, pounded root creates suds when mixed with water, suitable for washing hair and clothes. Grows in elevations up to 2600m (8,500').
