Species
Z. aquatica is a clump-forming, aquatic, annual grass with flat, broadly linear, dark green leaves and reed-like stems bearing feathery, conical panicles of pale green flower spikelets in summer. Flowers are followed by rice-like, edible seeds turning dark black-brown when ripe.
